Summary

London Another adventure as Macro links up with his mother in London to run an inn, but the local thugs want a cut。 Beaten down Macro is surprised when Cato comes to his aid。

Richie Gilbertson

A change of tack, in this the latest instalment of the series, as Macro takes on ‘organised crime’ in Londinium。 After returning to Britannia to see his mother Macro learns that a crime boss is bleeding their business dry, but his attempts to remedy the situation soon get him into more trouble than he can handleAnother exciting adventure in this series。 Enjoyable and fast-paced and I hope Mr Scarrow is busy scribbling away on ideas for book xxi

Five stars until that idiot Cato turned up: swears everyone to secrecy, then tells his very young son where he's going; goes into an inn and then announces where they're going; thinks soldiers need a rope and grappling hook to climb a 12' wall and then he carries the blessed thing 。。。 and so on。 Sorry, put Cato in charge of the bedding store and leave the soldiering to Macro。 Five stars until that idiot Cato turned up: swears everyone to secrecy, then tells his very young son where he's going; goes into an inn and then announces where they're going; thinks soldiers need a rope and grappling hook to climb a 12' wall and then he carries the blessed thing 。。。 and so on。 Sorry, put Cato in charge of the bedding store and leave the soldiering to Macro。 。。。more

Brilliant book glad to see the boys back together

Macro and Cato are like The Two Ronnies or Morecambe and Wise。 Individually they are very good, but it's only when they come together as a team that they become exceptional。 The first two-thirds of the book was 100% Macro and yes, it was an enjoyable read with the yarns of the old bull, but the book became so much better when Cato joined in the story。 I expect Mr Scarrow knows this, which will be why book #21 will be back to Macro and Cato together again。 So another enjoyable book, but looking f Macro and Cato are like The Two Ronnies or Morecambe and Wise。 Individually they are very good, but it's only when they come together as a team that they become exceptional。 The first two-thirds of the book was 100% Macro and yes, it was an enjoyable read with the yarns of the old bull, but the book became so much better when Cato joined in the story。 I expect Mr Scarrow knows this, which will be why book #21 will be back to Macro and Cato together again。 So another enjoyable book, but looking forward to the dynamic duo returning。 。。。more

Well, Marco is back in Brittiana。 He has traveled there with his wife and he will have to fight privates, local gangs, and even local tribes to stay alive。 Although half the book covers most of these adventures his friend, Cato does join them in battling the gangs of London。 Lots of action and they both meet Boudica again while in London。 Get ready for another great Simon Scarrow book with Cato and Marco。

The action in this series has, effectively come full circle, with Cato and Macro, temporarily separated for the last episode, back together again in Britain, encountering old allies and making new enemies。 It is as big a page turner as ever, although there were repeated minor continuity errors in the text。 However they weren't enough to deter me from signing on for another campaign。。。 The action in this series has, effectively come full circle, with Cato and Macro, temporarily separated for the last episode, back together again in Britain, encountering old allies and making new enemies。 It is as big a page turner as ever, although there were repeated minor continuity errors in the text。 However they weren't enough to deter me from signing on for another campaign。。。 。。。more

Time moves on for Cato and, especially, Macro, but another enjoyable title on this series, set in London。

Really enjoy a ‘Cato and Macro。’ The characters work so well together。 This book starts with Macro having retired from the Army and heading to London to join his mother at their pub。From fighting river pirates to tribesman and then ruthless gangs the story never lets up。 Unlike a Rebus character who is ageing with bad health- COPD。 Macro is a tad greyer, a bit slower - but just as handy with a gladius。Now I need to read the vast number of Scarrows before this book👍

Mr Jeffery

A nice easy light read。

I enjoyed was again these romans adventuresMacro is retired but the way he goes on its not a retirement his after and with hes friend Cato they are again fighting the bad ones and this time its the street gangs of London they are sorting out。If you are a fan of these two you wont be disappointed in this book。Well done Simon Scarrow

Well, what a slow burner! For half the book it seemed like this was going to be solely about Macro。 I was worried that the series was heading towards splitting the titular characters up permanently。 Good news is that Cato rejoins and all is well, except for the usual plan going wrong, bitter battle and being conned by those in power to close the book as usual。 Can’t wait for the next one!

Ted Kennedy

On and OnLike a Roman legion conducting a siege the series goes on and on。 I have been with it since Book 1 and am a “fan” This novel can be criticized for its running on and on telling a store using Chapters where pages would do but then it would be a short story The constant foreshadowing of the upcoming revolt is heavy and overdone However I am still a fan and will go on rrading

Jay Cothrum

worth the readI’ve read every book in the series。 It was a nice change of pace from the usual storylines。 It was a good read。

Terry Simpson

Realistic tale of the growth of the gangs。 The aftermath of the Roman invasion was entrepreneurism, whether that be legal or in this case illegal gangs being up。 Veterans bored with civilian life missed the rumbustious life and to create wealth resorted to a gang culture。 As usual Macro gets involved and when visited by Cato they devise a plan of retribution on the gangs。

Des Cave

The normal great read from Simon Scarrow。 Cato and Macro working together again。

Jonathon

The duo are reunited finally and some old friends turn up too。。。。absolutely awesome book , just have to wait for the next book now which is on pre order for later in the year。 As always Mr Keeble has done an amazing job bringing life to the characters。

Druss

That was a thrilling read!! Plenty of action。 Pacy BBC and well written。

Entry #20 in Simon Scarrow's Macro and Cato series, which means there's been approximately one entry per year。I can't believe it's been going that long (ummm 。。。 in a good way)。Anyway, we're now back at the original setting of the series - back in Brittania; back after Cato and Macro's various adventures across the Roman Empire。Things have changes since then, however - Macro is now retired from the legions, whereas Cato (originally Macro's optio) now outranks him and now has a family of his own Entry #20 in Simon Scarrow's Macro and Cato series, which means there's been approximately one entry per year。I can't believe it's been going that long (ummm 。。。 in a good way)。Anyway, we're now back at the original setting of the series - back in Brittania; back after Cato and Macro's various adventures across the Roman Empire。Things have changes since then, however - Macro is now retired from the legions, whereas Cato (originally Macro's optio) now outranks him and now has a family of his own to look after。The previous entry in the series (The Emperor's Exile is the one in which Macro retired, leaving - with his new wife Petronella - to travel back to Brittania to reconnect with his own mother and to look after his share of an inn that she has opened in Londinium。 As a result, he was missing for large chunks of the narrative: circa three quarters or so of the story, let us say。 Meanwhile, Cato was charged with accompanying Emperor Nero's mistress Claudia Acte into exile on Sardinia, with the bulk of the novel then following Cato, the burgeoning romance between him and Claudia and events on that island。This novel mirrors that approach, with the larger bulk of this following Macro and his adventures in Londinium and in the veterans colony of Camulodunum (which I've just found out is Colchester, and the first Roman Capital of the province) before the two principal characters finally reunite circa - again - three quarters of the way into the story。There's also the groundwork laid here for, to paraphrase the closing words of the novel, the brewing storm, with the inclusion of characters from earlier novels (round about When the Eagle Hunts) who belong to the Iceni tribe, and with how they are being treated by their new Roman overlords。 Anybody with a passing knowledge of UK history will know who I mean 。。。 。。。more

Yojimbus in LonduniumAn alternate title could have been A Fistful of Sestercii。。。 Macro wants a quiet but rich retirement in Britainnia after 25 years of faithful service。 Unfortunately he runs afoul of two rival gangs and almost loses his life。 At the same time, who is coming to help? Cato, of course, but he has a problem of his own。 Together they solve the problems in a way that highly reminds the reader of Kurosawa's Yojimbo or Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of Dollars。 Yojimbus in LonduniumAn alternate title could have been A Fistful of Sestercii。。。 Macro wants a quiet but rich retirement in Britainnia after 25 years of faithful service。 Unfortunately he runs afoul of two rival gangs and almost loses his life。 At the same time, who is coming to help? Enjoyable readThe book follows the pattern of the prior books in the series。 Marco and Cato get in and out of dire situations。 The reader knows about the coming Bodicca revolt which the two heroes do not。 It will be interesting to see how they survive。

Centurion Macro and Prefect Cato join forces with some retired legionaries in Roman Briton to ‘oust’ two protection gangs in London。 The ‘plot’ also had retired Centurion Macro leading retired legionaries against rebelling tribes in Scotland where they barely escaped with their lives。 All rather tired plotting and action。

I've read all the Cato and Macro books and enjoyed most of them。 In the beginning the books were excellent, interesting romps in Ancient Rome and Britain, as well as other states。 I have to say that they are getting a bit dull。 Either the author is running out of ideas, or I'm just picky。 It's like the TV series that is kept going purely because it's popular even though the story has run its course。 These are starting to feel like that。 I like to buy books new so the author gets some royalties。 I've read all the Cato and Macro books and enjoyed most of them。 In the beginning the books were excellent, interesting romps in Ancient Rome and Britain, as well as other states。 I have to say that they are getting a bit dull。 Either the author is running out of ideas, or I'm just picky。 It's like the TV series that is kept going purely because it's popular even though the story has run its course。 These are starting to feel like that。 I like to buy books new so the author gets some royalties。 I shan't buy any more of the Cato and Macro series, I'll just borrow them from the library - that's how disappointed I am。 。。。more

Anything Simon Scarrow writes is worth reading and The Honour of Rome (Eagle #20) was no different。 It was an excellent book which I recomment it highly。 In fact I couldn't put the book down reading deep into the night causing me to lose sleep。 If you enjoy books about the Roman Legions, then get this book, you won't be disappointed。Joe CorsoAuthor of Lafitte's Treasure Anything Simon Scarrow writes is worth reading and The Honour of Rome (Eagle #20) was no different。 It was an excellent book which I recomment it highly。 In fact I couldn't put the book down reading deep into the night causing me to lose sleep。 If you enjoy books about the Roman Legions, then get this book, you won't be disappointed。Joe CorsoAuthor of Lafitte's Treasure 。。。more

How very disappointing。 It is hard to believe that the same Simon Scarrow wrote this as in the earlier books。 A rambling and unbelievable plot in which the two hero protagonists display such naivete and poor weapon skills that they did not deserve to survive。Particularly annoying was the introduction of a mute boy who had so little part in the story that he was superfluous and a waste of words。I have enjoyed the earlier books but shall not read any new ones。
